bc i haven't updated in a while...and i had to type a lot for this already...here are my views towards chain vs indiv owned bookestores:
enjoy...
Meagan Barnes: Hellow
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: high
Meagan Barnes: Would it be all right if I went ahead and interviewed you?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: yeah gone head
Meagan Barnes: All right, before I begin, I do want to tell you, I have a lot of questions, so this could be time consuming, I hope that's okay.
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: ok
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: better get started then
Meagan Barnes: Which is your favorite chain bookstore to shop in and why?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: I like Brentanno's, it is a division or like a Borders really i like it bc it isn't so big that u get lost in it , and the people there are very helpful...and they have always had the stuff i was looking ofr
Meagan Barnes: Do you prefer chain bookstores or individually owned stores?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: lately chain bc they seem to have more sales and i don't have a lot of money, but i use to go to a indiv owned store near my house b4 it went out of business
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: what class is this for again?
Meagan Barnes: anthropology
Meagan Barnes: What qualities do you look for in a bookstore?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: i like it bc it isn't so big that u get lost in it , and the people there are very helpful...and they have always had the stuff i was looking ofr
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: pretty much the same stuff
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: and i guess i culd add good discounts to that
Meagan Barnes: What sections do you browse the most? Why?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: fiction because it has a lot of the Classics in it
Meagan Barnes: What is your interest in classics?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: what do u mean?
Meagan Barnes: What attracts you to the classics?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: i see them as being worthwhile, that since they are classics ther emust be something i am missing out on if i don't read them, Also i read a lot of classics to pick up on allusions in other novels that i read and just in the day to day text of things
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: they are classics for a reason
Meagan Barnes: What sorts of people do you find in bookstores?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: well i don't really go to a book store to find people but...
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: i'd say a wide range of people: from the self help/do it urselfer. to the newyork times reading intelectual
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: the parents there to find a children's book and then everyday people just looking for somethign intersting to eread
Meagan Barnes: Is there a difference between the types of people found in small bookstores compared to chain bookstores?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: not really, if there is i don't know what it would be
Meagan Barnes: How much time do you spend reading?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: daily or weekly or what?
Meagan Barnes: daily
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: i'd say at LEAST 2 hours , anywhere from 2-5 hours a day
Meagan Barnes: Would that be for pleasure or for school?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: both
Meagan Barnes: How do you split that time?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: hour for pleasure usually...and whatever the rest of the time is for school usually
Meagan Barnes: How much time do you spend shopping for books?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: well i usually only shop for books maybe once or twice every 2 months or so...and i'm in the bookstore a while...under an hour though
Meagan Barnes: How do you divide your time between, browsing, sitting down, reading, etc?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: IN the bk store?
Meagan Barnes: yes
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: i browse most of the time, reading the back cover as i go...i don't really sit down an d read there...so i'd say the whole time browsing
Meagan Barnes: Do you buy books online?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: I haven't yet but its a possibility
Meagan Barnes: How would you describe the atmosphere of a chain bookstore?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: efficient, buzzing, big...?
Meagan Barnes: What about the atmosphere of a smaller bookshop?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: personal, soft noise, quaint...
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: those last 2 were hard to answer!
Meagan Barnes: Do chain and smaller bookstores share any sense of atmosphere?
Meagan Barnes: =)
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: they both seem studious...with all the books, and are both environments where one could read easily in...both are comfortable like
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: so i guess yes
Meagan Barnes: Do you act differently inside stores than outside?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: i may not talk as much but that would be it...
Meagan Barnes: Is there a difference in the way you speak, such as volume, pitch, or vocabulary, when you are in a bookstore?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: if there are people around sitting and reading i talk quieter than normal...volume is the only difference
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: i just paper clipped my ear....
Meagan Barnes: What is different in book shopping from other types of shopping, such as clothes shopping?
Meagan Barnes: (Was that painful?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: no
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: book shopping takes longer bc u cant merely look at the out side and say oh that is a good/bad book, you have to invest a few more moments than just a glance and read a paragraph or two
Meagan Barnes: Are there any other differences?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: talk softer...um...
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: something u have to do by urself mostly ...
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: bc diff frineds have diff tastes and reading styles an such
Meagan Barnes: How do you act toward cashiers?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: nicely now that i have experience as a cashier myself
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: try to be a lil sociable
Meagan Barnes: How do you act toward fellow customers?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: try to give them some space , and not talk loudly around them if they are reading...just general politeness
Meagan Barnes: Do you shop for books alone or with friends?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: both
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: half in half
Meagan Barnes: Describe your interaction with your friends, when you shop with them.
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: if i read somethign that i think they might like i show it to them so they can read it to, sometimes it is just us shopping side by side and no real combined shopping
Meagan Barnes: How do you choose which books to buy?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: i have to like it enough that i won't just borrow it from the library, it has to be over the topics i like...or a classic novel
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: it also has to be inmy price range
Meagan Barnes: How do you handle books before you buy them, as apposed to after you buy them?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: b4 i don't like bend back the cover or break the binding or whatever...after i do and toss them around instead of handling them gently
Meagan Barnes: Do you spend time in the bookstore coffee shop?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: not usually no
Meagan Barnes: Do you ever buy things other than books, like impulse buys?
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: i've bought mints in a bookstore b4...and them magnets but those were for a bday present for someone
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: *then
Meagan Barnes: All right, thank you.
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: that was long
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: what do u have to do with all of this now?
Meagan Barnes: Well, beside the interviews, I have to take notes, turn in notes, and later, I have to write a anthropologic study paper on it
cocacolakec@sbcglobal.net: f.u.n.
Meagan Barnes: lol yeah
